John Ericsson Elementary School, 2006
Ericsson Elementary School currently is a Pre K-5 school.  Today we are called Northrop Urban Environmental School.
Ericsson is in the southeast region of Minneapolis, and its boundaries are 42nd and 43rd Street to the north,  Hiawatha Avenue to the east, Minnehaha Parkway to the south, and Cedar Avenue to the west.  It is named after John Ericsson, a Swedish inventor and engineer who designed and built the U.S.S. Monitor for The United States Navy during the Civil War.  This is a mainly residential area that is also populated with much recreational land. Both Lake Hiawatha Park and Lake  Hiawatha Golf Course are located in Ericsson, and Minnehaha Creek runs through the neighborhood as well.

John Ericsson 1803 - 1889

John Ericsson was born on July 31, 1803.  He was an American Swedish-born inventor and mechanical engineer. 
Ericsson was born in Värmland, Sweden, but primarily came to be active in the United States.  Although none of his inventions created any large industries, he is regarded as one of the most influential mechanical engineers ever.  Ericsson's inventions revolutionized navigation and the construction of warships including his ship The Destroyer (1878), which could launch submarine torpedoes.  He also explored the possibility of using solar energy and gravitation and tidal forces as sources of power. John Ericsson died on March 8, 1889.
